Housing Chart Book

Non-Farm Payroll Employment

Non-farm payroll and construction employment data come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics which surveys 145,000 businesses and government agencies monthly in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings. During the recession, the economy shed 7.3 million jobs. Since the recession ended, job growth has averaged 151,000 jobs added per month. The state of labor markets deeply affects the performance of the housing sector. A return in construction jobs will also herald a recovery in the housing market.
